Writing New Media — Day 7

I finally settled on developing my website for my Fall section of English 201. At first, since we were talking about technology and new media, I had planned on something techie, although not quite Matrix-themed. But it’s important to me to communicate that this use of technology is simply allowing us to do something that has always been done, except it was expensive an time consuming to do so: work with images rather than (and in conjunction with) alphabetic print. So here’s the first draft of the homepage. It still needs some items (like post-it notes and a wall outlet), and eventually, this will be moved into Flash for some animations and sounds.
201 home page (edit: this is the finished image file I will animate in Flash . . . with sound, hopefully).

  1. Looks like an awesome site (in fact, I may “appropriate” some of the design elements in the future…). I’m anxious to talk with you about Flash and how you’re using it. Any plans on integrating it into 201?

  2. There will definitely be a Flash project(s). We started with a very simple visual argument, built from several images. It could play like a Power Point prez, but we then added a button that would activate the next slide. Again, not much different from PP, but it builds up to activating other events, such as animations with the button (interactivity).

We’ll get together when I get back. I may not get much prelims reading done this summer, with all the work I’ll have to do for 201.

  3. I really like the monitor as shadow box presentation. I can’t wait to see what you do with your 201 class! I might have to steal a few ideas from you for my 100 group (part of one of the awesome FIGs).
